The first (autumn) semester of the MSc in Nuclear Engineering takes place at EPFL. The second (spring) semester takes place at ETH Zurich. Courses in both semesters are organized on a weekly basis. The third semester is dedicated to the industrail internship, the semester project and four compulsory core courses organized as lecture blocks.
The Master’s thesis in the fourth semester is carried out at a lab of the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, at EPFL or at ETH Zurich. The standard start of the master program in Nuclear Engineering is in the autumn semester. In special cases, students may start in the spring semester if the admission committee requires to take additional courses to fulfill the admission requirements.
The student workload required to achieve the objectives of the program is measured in credit points (cp), according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
A minimum of 120 credits are required for the Master’s degree, including 46 credits from the compulsory courses and 30 credits from the Master’s thesis.
Tutors help define a curriculum for each student, structured and weighted as follows: (Agreement between tutor and student)
|
Core courses |
62 credits: 46 credits compulsory, 16 credits elective |
|
Free elective course |
10 credits, elective |
|
Course in entrepreneurship (management of technology or humanities) |
minimum 2 credits, elective, to be chosen from the full offer of the universities |
| Semester project | 8 credits |
| Industrial internship | 8 credits |
| Master’s thesis |
30 credits; the condition for embarking upon the Master’s research is to have acquired a minimum of 80 course credits (including the 8 from the semester project and 8 from the industrial internship). |
Credit points shown above are minimum requirements. Students may subscribe to more courses on a voluntary basis. Obtained credits from thos elective courses can be reported on the diploma supplement on request up to a maximum total number of 130 credits.
Different forms of assessment (e.g. examinations, oral presentations, case studies, reports, poster-sessions, etc.) are used to evaluate the students' performance in reaching the required level of learning for each curriculum component.
