  1. Candidates apply online either to EPFL or to ETH Zurich. See the website of EPFL's Service Académique (SAC) or ETH Zurich's Admissions Office for details of the application procedure.
  2. In your application you must state your preferences with regard to the three tracks and the corresponding Master’s tutors, choosing at least two, ranked by priority. If you apply via EPFL you do this in a separate letter attached with your application documents. For ETH Zurich you can provide this information in the online application form.
  3. You are recommended (but not required) to submit your scores in the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test.
  4. Independently of which of the two universities you are applying through, the Admission Committee will allocate you to the university at which you will be formally admitted and assign the tutor who will be responsible for you during the entire program. The allocation of the selected candidates to either ETH Zurich or EPFL is made on the following basis:
    1. Students with degrees from a Swiss university are free to choose the university at which to enrol.
    2. Students from non-Swiss universities will be admitted, in approximately equal number, to both EPFL and ETH Zurich, the allocation being partly guided by the stated technical interests of the students (e.g. thermal-hydraulics at ETH Zurich, physics and materials at EPFL, energy systems at either ETH Zurich or EPFL).
  5. Please note that admission and registration for courses are two separate, independent procedures. Regardless of the university of primary enrolment all students follow the same curriculum, so that all students will be registered for courses at EPFL for the first semester, and at ETH Zurich for the second. While studying away from their university of primary enrolment, you will be registered as “exchange” students at the host university.
  6. The Semester and Master’s research work will be carried out under the responsibility of a professor from either ETH Zurich or EPFL, irrespective of the university to which you have been admitted.
